Pateurella pestis

Morphology

i)                    shape – it is usually a small oval rod with rounded ends and convex sides . swollen  involution forms are frequently found .
ii)                   size – it is about 1.5 μ in length and 0.6 μ in breadth .
iii)                 Pleomorphism is the characteristic feature .
iv)                 Non-flagellated , so non-motile
v)                  Non-sporing
vi)                 Gram negative bacillus .


Important members of paterulla pestis

i)                    Pateurella lepiseptica – present in rabbies
ii)                   Pasteurella oviseptica- present is sheep .
iii)                 Pasteurella muriseptica- present in mice
iv)                 Pasteurella aviseptica – present in fowls .
v)                  Pasteurella pseudotuberculosis – present in guineapig
vi)                 Pasteurella oestis – present in man .

Pathology produced by Pasteurella pestis

    In man four types of infections occur like –
a)      Bubonic plague
b)      Pneuonic plague
c)      Septicaemic plague

d)      Cellolo-cutaneous plague
